Zoom on the Veterinary Laboratory System Assessment organized in Vangvieng

A three-day Veterinary Laboratory System Assessment workshop has been organized from March 15-17, 2021, in Vangvieng, Vientiane Province, Lao PDR to assess and define the strengths, weaknesses and priority needs for future laboratory system capacity development.

Leaders and representatives of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Lao PDR, as well as development partners from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and representatives from the Mérieux Foundation and IQLS participated in the assessment and debrief session, chaired by Mrs Vilayphone Vonglaphim, Director General of Department of Livestock and Fisheries.

The assessment workshop followed the standard tool developed by IQLS, with the assistance of the Mérieux Foundation’s Lao PDR team, to help facilitate the discussion on the strengths, weaknesses, priority gaps and needs for future improvements.

A debrief session was organized to share the preliminary findings and recommendations as well as to discuss potential technical assistance that the SEALAB project will be able to provide. Mrs Vilayphone Vonglaphim, Director General of Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoAF) stated that the quality of veterinary laboratory will be continuously improved and eventually meet ISO standards, ensuring not only the accuracy of diagnosis of priority zoonotic diseases but also the right conditions for livestock exportation to neighboring countries and beyond.

The preliminary findings and recommendations of the Veterinary Laboratory System Assessment were well received and endorsed. The National Animal Health Laboratory, the DLF and MoAF look forward to good technical collaboration with the consortium partners to implement SEALAB Project activities.
